How Artists Keep Improving
There is always more to learn
1 Set a high bar for yourself. Keep only your good work - the artwork you are proud to show to others. Don't be afraid to paint over and change old work you are not happy with.
2 Don't be afraid to destroy your work, not everything deserves to survive. Clear out the work that does not serve you to make way for better. Destroying your own work builds trust in your judgement.
3 Clearing out old paintings clears more than your studio space - it clears your mind and makes way for your next breakthrough.
4 Art like music hits the right note and we instinctively know if it is good or not. Trust your instincts.
5 Constantly analyse your work. Think deeply about what worked and why and incorporate those elements in your next painting.
Compare old work with new will help you to see how much you have improved.
The two landscapes below were painted five years apart.
