How To Find Your Style As An Artist
You don't find your style - you grow into it - but consciously thinking about our style will help it to develop.
1 Start by working on at least ten art pieces and think about your style as you work. Focus on small improvements you can make on each one and watch your style emerge.
2 Choose your medium. That doesn’t mean you can’t experiment, especially when you are starring out as a artist, but you should become established as an oil painter, water colourist etc.
3 Give thought to what colours you love and choose your palette. Using every colour available will be too confusing for you and your viewers. Also think about the tones and tints - are your paintings saturated in light, or do your prefer more subdued, darker tones?
4 Decide your genre. Are you drawn to paint landscapes or still life? Seascapes or pet portraits? Most artists will instinctively know what they want to paint, but it is still a decision that needs to be made.
5 Consistent mark making is important. If you like certain marks then incorporate them into future works and this will become part of your style.
